ZERO / ZERO

Last summer we visited a Heinz Mack exhibition in Baden Baden. I promised then to make an individual post about it – so here it goes :))))

The Frieder Burda Museum hosted the temporary exhibition of Light Shadow (Licht Schatten) between 20 March and 20 September 2015. Through this exhibition we had a chance to learn not only about the creative work of Heinz Mack but also about the world of the ZERO movement.

The ZERO movement was founded in 1958 in Düsseldorf by Heinz Mack and Otto Piene. In 1961 Günther Uecker joined them. It came to life in post-war Germany, when it had lost its cultural identity and was crying out for “a new beginning”, starting from “ground zero”, turning its back on the previous traditions of fine art. The central motif of their work was light and movement, and the media used for the art piece.
ZERO never was an organization in the original sense of the word, it was rather a web of human relations formed along the lines of an artistic aspect.
Although the group broke up in 1967, it has come to be considered one of the most influential avantgarde movements of the 20th century.

What we saw at the exhibition could best be expressed by an extract of a poem (1963) by Heinz Mack, Otto Piene and Günther Uecker:

“Zero is silence. Zero is the beginning. Zero is round. Zero spins. Zero is the moon. The sun is Zero. Zero is white. The desert Zero. The sky above Zero. The night.”

A háború utáni kulturális identitását vesztett Németországban jött létre az „újrakezdést”, a „nulláról indulást” hirdetve, a korábbi képzőművészeti hagyományoknak hátat fordítva.

“A Zero a csend. A Zero a kezdet. A Zero kerek. A Zero forog. A Zero a Hold. A Nap Zero. A Zero fehér. A sivatag Zero. Az égbolt Zero. Az éjszaka.”

I must confess that I do not like to discuss clothes. I could write about the colour wheel – complementary colours, general dress codes for different figures or different styles…all in vain. On the one hand, it is because there is an endless number of essays on this topic written by real experts of the field, and on the other, because today’s dressing is all about experimentation. It is not the revolt of an upcoming subculture, it has become the mainstream. As far as the general public is concerned, the former rules of dressing do not apply anymore, they seem to be fading away.

Let’s celebrate our darling mothers today, who work tirelessly for us every day!

N othing can bring back the childhood memory of being lured out of bed by the smell of breakfast in the air – rather than the alarm clock going off at six o’clock “at dawn”.
Every time, however, when I manage to “reproduce” my favourite childhood dishes, those honey-sweet scents of home come to life again: past, present and future join together.
Every family has its own scents that are passed on from generation to generation.

D esign furniture and contemporary architecture. The Swiss furniture company Vitra has created a Campus that is one of its kind. We can visit the buildings of Sanaa, Frank Gehry and Zaha Hadid – among others – through a guided tour, see a temporary exhibition (Making Africa, until 13-09-2015) in the museum, join a workshop or admire and even try the different pieces of furniture made by the company.
Naturally, we can also place an order for our favourite item in VitraHaus (designed by Herzog & De Meuron).
